Trump promises to bring back whaling and “make New Bedford great again” again
In 2016, candidate Donald Trump campaigned to bring back whaling and make “New Bedford great again.” Now as President, he’s pushing once again to bring back what made New Bedford one of the richest cities in America.
New Bedford was the “city that lit the world” using oil generated from the whaling industry and considered one of the wealthiest cities in America at the height of whaling in the middle of the 19th century. The city invested in textiles after the whaling industry collapsed, but most of the factories sat empty.
“New Bedford is the most dangerous city in Massachusetts and their textile mills are filled with hippy artists,” said Trump. “What’s the unemployment rate there? Like 95%? It’s time to bring back whaling and make New Bedford great again.”
Trump got his inspiration after visiting Norway.
“I just visited socialist Norway where whaling is legal,” Trump continued. “I bagged me a Minke whale bull before I left Norway. Beautiful country and beautiful whale. I’ll be going back soon.”
